Optical gratings are prominement in the optical industry because of their dispersive properties. They have found thier way into many applications including wavelength demultipexing, filters and spectrometry. In a free-space arrangement, gratings disperse the light in one dimension.
This research is based on two dimensional dispersion which is created by combining two gratings in series along the optical path. Multiple diffraction orders arising from the first diffraction grating are separated orthogonally by the second grating. This transforms spatially linear dispersion into a raster scan of wavelengths. This idea is applied to two applications: Beamscanning and wavelength demultiplexing.
